Call for Applications for the position of PARTICIPATORY MAPPING CONSULTANT, INFORBIO ProjectThe International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Cameroon is seeking a consultant to assist with participatory mapping in communities in the Boumba Ngocko Division in the East Region of Cameroon as part of the INFORBIO Project and to train existing project staff on the techniques.The Congo Basin Institute (CBI) is a joint program between IITA and UCLA hosted by IITA for higher learning and scientific excellence in Central Africa. We generate research that decision makers can use to address sub-Saharan Africa’s environmental and development challenges. CBI is driven by dedicated researchers and donors that support research and training in the Congo Basin. The INFORBIO Project is based on the One Health approach and will raise excellency in the management of existing Protected Areas, establish new community-led conservation avenues to increase forest areas and connectivity, foster forest-based effective economic modalities, and will set an early warning system and intervention response to minimise the risk of zoonotic outbreak.A – Duties and Responsibilities
  • Briefing existing IITA project staff on techniques for participatory mapping
  • Leading the implementation of participatory mapping in the five project communities in the Boumba and Ngocko Division where activities are being implemented
  • Elaborate together with community members in each community including:
  • The mapping of current land uses by community members
  • The identification of potential future land uses of lands by the community
  • The areas of particular conflict with wildlife or specific wildlife movement areas
  • The identification of areas that could be suitable for intensified agriculture, increased tree cover and/or for restoration activities
  • Elaborate a plan and implement the mapping process for the five communities over a two-three month period
  • Conduct training sessions and integrate existing project staff into the mapping process
  • Produce community maps for each community superimposed on georeferenced digital maps
  • Provide a detailed report including the process or approach used, the difficulties or constraints faced and the recommendations
  • Provide a digital resource pack including reference materials and guides on the participatory mapping process for staff
  • Perform any other duties assigned by supervisor.
B – QualificationEducation: A master’s degree in cartography or related fieldsWork Experience:
  • At least three (03) years of relevant experience in the field of Cartography, Environment, Rural development.
  • Experience working in an international team is an advantage
Language:
  • The candidate must communicate fluently in English and French both written and spoken.
  • Fluency in a language used in the project sites would also be an advantage.
C - Key CompetencesCore competencies:
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of forest ecology and restoration principles.
  • Able to work and communicate collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Willing and able to travel to the project sites as needed
Technical/Functional Skills: The Participatory mapping consultant shall have:
  • Experience in participatory mapping methods
  • Skills in collecting geographic data in the field
  • Experience in working with rural and indigenous communities
  • Experience in community engagement and participatory planning
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize and deliver training
